The Quinte Organic Farmers Coop
The QOFC was established in 2005 by local organic growers. They came together to establish something that would benefit both consumers and farmers. As a coop, they are able to supply a large variety of vegetables, meats, speciality items such as teas and potted plants. The coop members work together and share marketing, distributing and growing tasks. The membership began with eleven growers and is continuing to expand. All growers and producers must be certified organic. Most of are certified by Organic Producers and Processors (OCPP). Members are located in Prince Edward, Hastings and Northumberland counties. Each specializes in certain types of vegetables or livestock.
There are beef, pork, lamb, goats, ducks, and geese producers. Livestock are chosen for outdoor hardiness, flavour, tenderness and quality. Breeds include Berkshire pigs, Red Poll and Dexter cattle. The QOFC menu features standard beef and pork cuts, sausages, ground beef and stewing cuts. Pork includes sausages and bacon. Lamb, goat, ducks, geese and sometimes rabbits are available.
The QOFC also offers vegetables, including asparagus, potatoes, greens, garlic and small fruits. Some growers feature culinary herbs and herbal teas, and a few grow speciality lettuces and blend salad mixes. Everyday varieties from beans, peppers and tomatoes to zucchinis are available. Many QOFC members grow unusual items such as mezuna, purple carrots, purple spinach, arugula, rainbow chard along with familiar varieties.
Many of these vegetables are heirloom and heritage varieties. Since they are naturally resistant to adverse weather conditions and insect pressures, these are best for organic farming. More importantly, heritage varieties are nutritious and flavourful!
All seeds are bought from trusted sources, usually Canadian owned organic seed companies. They have not been genetically modified or treated with fungicides. Such seeds are often saved each year on members' farms because they `breed true'. They can be retained by customers for use in their own gardens!
